Named 1992 Feb 18 for the city of Celle, Nidersachsen, Germany [MPC19693].

Companion discovered 2001 Sep 18 by W. H. Ryan, E. V. Ryan, C. T. Martinez, and L. Stewart using lightcurve observations from Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope. Announced 2003 May 03 [R03a].
