Named 2015 Jun 02 for the mythological Roman god of the underworld and death [MPC94392].

Companion discovered 2007 Oct 14 by S. S. Sheppard and C. A. Trujillo using adaptive optics telescope observations from Subaru/Gemini/Magellen telescopes, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA. Announced 2008 Aug 01 [S08c]. Permanent designation I Somnus, assigned 2015 Jun 02; named for the mythological Roman god of the underworld and sleep [MPC94392].
