Named 2014 Apr 15 for the king of Valar in J. R. R. Tolkien's fiction [MPC88005].

Companion discovered 2006 Jul 25 by K. S. Noll, W. M. Grundy, D. C. Stephens, and H. F. Levison using Hubble Space Telescope observations from Hubble Space Telescope. Announced 2006 Sep 07 [N06d]. Permanent designation I Thorondor, assigned 2014 Apr 15; named for the lord of the eagles in J. R. R. Tolkien's fiction [MPC88005].
