Information on Toutatis and asteroids near the 3:1 resonance with Jupiter

My paper "Investigation of evolution of orbits similar to that of (4179) Toutatis" cites some data on asteroids. This page provides updates to that information. When that paper was completed (May 1994) there were 5,165 numbered asteroids. Data on asteroids below is an update through 16 Oct 2001 when there were 30,716 numbered asteroids. Unnumbered asteroids observed at more than one opposition numbered 53,996 on this date. These numbers have since increased (as of 12 June 2003) to 65,559 numbered asteroids and 154,461 asteroids with provisional designations (these figures do not include centaurs and TNOs).

An aside: table 5 of the report mentions (5065) 1990 FP1 as one of several asteroids with orbits similar to that of the object in test 8. Coincidentally, this asteroid was subsequently named (5065) Johnstone.

In 1995 R. Scott Hudson and Steven J. Ostro published the results of their analysis of radar studies of Toutatis conducted during the 8 Dec 1992 close approach. They produced a doubled-lobed shape model with dimensions of 4.6 km by 2.3 km by 1.9 km, or a volume of 7.7 km3. (See Hudson and Ostro, 1995, "Shape and non-principal axis spin state of Asteroid 4179 Toutatis," Science (270:84-86).)

R. Scott Hudson, Steven J. Ostro, and D. J. Scheeres published improved results in 2003, incorporated additional radar data from the 29 Nov 1996 close approach. They identify a number of possible craters up to 750 meters in diameter. (See Hudson, Ostro, and Scheeres, 2003, "High-resolution model of Asteroid 4179 Toutatis," Icarus (161:346-355).)

Additional close approaches occurred on 29 Nov 1996 and 31 Oct 2000. Toutatis will pass the Earth on 29 Sep 2004 at "only" 1,550,000 km, about four times the Earth-Moon distance--the closest predicted pass by a near-Earth asteroid for the next few decades. Additional passes will occur on 9 Nov 2008 and 12 Dec 2012.


Asteroids near the 3:1 resonance with Jupiter

The 3:1 resonance with Jupiter corresponds to a semimajor axis of 2.50151 AU. The 1:4 resonance with the Earth corresponds to a semimajor axis of 2.51984 AU.
