The Moon
All images copyright © 2001-2002 by Wm. Robert Johnston, unless otherwise indicated.
This view of the Moon mimics a view photographed by departing Apollo 17 astronauts in 1972. The actual image may be viewed at Views of the Solar System.
The color map is the albedo map produced from Clementine images, available at the USGS Clementine web site. This was combined with a bump map created by James Hastings-Trew.

This view from 190 km above the Moon shows the Earth over the crater Schrödinger, near the Moon's south pole. The south pole, on the horizon at the far left, may harbor water ice in some permanently shadowed craters.
This uses a partial map of the Moon from the USGS Flagstaff web site, produced from Clementine images.

This narrow-angle view is from 15,400 km above the Earth, showing part of the United States and the Moon in the background at the Earth's limb.
The Earth image is reprojected from an image from Visible Earth. The original image is by the SeaWiFS Project (credit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and ORBIMAGE). Field of view is 10°.

Part of the Moon's far side is seen here from 3,600 km above the Moon, with the Earth in the background.
This uses a map of the Moon from the USGS Flagstaff web site, produced from Clementine images, combined with a bump map created by James Hastings-Trew. The Earth map is from Visible Earth.

This is a close-up view of part of the Moon's near side, showing the extreme north-west portion of Oceanus Procellarum. The prominent crater on the right, showing its a central peak, is Pythagoras.
This uses the same Clementine map as in previous images, except that it has been colorized.
