Daedalus-class starships

In service: ~2162 to 2196 (note: some ships were converted to freighters and served through at least 2267).
Length: 105 meters
Beam (width): 49 meters
Draught (height): 32 meters
Crew: 230
Propulsion: warp drive (twin nacelles); fusion impulse engines

The Daedalus-class starships were among the first Starfleet vessels dedicated to exploration. They explored the frontiers of Federation space in the years immediately following the founding of the United Federation of Planets in 2161. Some were lost to natural phenomena or actions by aliens--sometimes with their fate unknown for decades.

Daedalus-class ships were equipped with subspace radio, but since they frequently ventured beyond coverage of Federation subspace relay stations they were sometimes confined to radio communications. They carried shuttlecraft but no transporters. Upgrades to the impulse engines were introduced in 2169.
